Crews Re-Dispatched to Structure Fire Following Renewed Fire Activity

Fairview Township, PAThis morning, shortly after 7:15 AM, firefighters from Fairview Fire and Rescue and Lake Shore Fire Department were dispatched to the 8100 block of West Lake Road for a reported barn fire. West County Paramedics’ 115 arrived on scene within five minutes of dispatch and reported a visible header, followed by confirmation of a working fire. Unit 115 advised Erie County dispatch that the structure appeared to be the same one previously affected. While en route, Engine 534 requested that Erie County dispatch two additional tankers due to the prior history at the location. This request brought in mutual aid tankers from Platea and Franklin Township. Millcreek’s Engine 925 was also added to the assignment for manpower support.Upon arrival, Engine 534 laid in large diameter hose to the fireground, and Command was established by Chief 530. The structure was reported to be fully involved, with a heavy fire load on the north and west sides. Engine 472 established water supply at the road by pumping from a  portable pond positioned along West Lake Road. West Lake Road was closed between Avonia Road and Fairplain Road for the duration of the incident due to portable pond placement and active shuttle operations.Water supply quickly became a significant challenge. Tanker shuttle operations were implemented to bring water in from several hydrants along West Lake Road; however, initial refill efforts were delayed when crews encountered a hydrant reportedly out of service. Eventually, active hydrants were located at Eaton and West Lake Road, Lord and West Lake Road, and near Station 53. Due to the ongoing water supply concerns, additional tankers from McKean Hose Company and Perry Hi-Way Hose Company were added to the response. At 7:58 AM, evacuation tones were transmitted due to dwindling water on the fireground and emerging concerns over the building’s structural stability, particularly due to spongy floor conditions. All companies performed a Personnel Accountability Report (PAR) following the evacuation order. Lake City’s Support 56 and West Ridge’s 478 provided rehab services on scene, offering refreshments, seating, and cooling stations to allow crews to rotate out and recover before returning to operations. At 8:59 AM, Chief 530 reported the fire was under control. However, around 9:00 AM, the structure partially collapsed due to the extent of the fire damage. A second set of evacuation tones were transmitted, and a full PAR was again conducted with all personnel accounted for and no injuries reported.Crews remained on scene applying water to hotspots. Due to safety concerns related to further collapse potential, West County EMA assisted in securing an excavator to bring down the remaining structure.Firefighters operated on scene for approximately four hours. At this time, no official determination has been made regarding the fire’s origin or cause. The residence had also experienced a fire the previous day, and no one was reportedly at home at the time due to that earlier incident. No injuries occurred, and all personnel remained safe throughout the operation.

Chief 520 and West County Paramedics (Unit 111) also responded directly to the scene.Initial reports indicated a fire in the basement of the structure. Engine 925 from Millcreek Fire went en route shortly after dispatch. Incoming crews were notified that the nearest hydrant was located at West Lake Road and Lord Road. With this information, Chief 520 requested two additional tankers, one from Franklin Township and one from Platea, to support the water supply.Upon arrival, Chief 520 reported a one-and-a-half-story residence with smoke showing from all sectors. He also advised incoming units of low-hanging wires on the east side of the driveway and instructed all apparatus to stay left when entering. Engine 534 arrived shortly after and performed a lay-in of large diameter hose from West Lake Road down the driveway.Chief 560 communicated additional concerns to Chief 520 regarding potential structural compromise on the first floor. However, crews were able to gain seamless access to the basement via cellar doors at the rear of the structure. Engine 502 established a position at the roadway and operated as a relay engine, pumping from incoming tankers to supply Engine 534. Meanwhile, the crew from Engine 925 deployed ladders on all sides of the structure. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down in the basement, a secondary crew advanced an additional hoseline to the first floor. As Girard cleared their earlier motor vehicle crash, Chief 520 requested additional manpower to the scene, specifically interior-qualified firefighters and a pump operator. This added Rescue 544 and Engine 553 to the response.By approximately 2:16 PM, interior crews reported the main body of fire had been knocked down and began checking for extension. Basement crews noted heavy charring to the floor joists in the C/D corner and cautioned those operating above.Once the fire was declared under control, positive pressure ventilation was utilized by using portable fans to ventilate the structure. Penelec responded and secured the power. Lake City and Kuhl Hose arrived with their rehab trailers and assisted with hydration and firefighter support on scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Frozen Hydrants, Sub-Zero Temperatures, and a Stubborn Blaze: Firefighters Battle Intense Harbor Street Fire

Conneaut, OHLast night at approximately 9 PM, Conneaut Fire and Rescue crews responded to a reported structure fire near 670 Harbor Street. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a residential structure with heavy involvement in the rear of the structure, extending to a vehicle in the driveway and threatening a nearby detached garage. Faced with extreme conditions, additional resources were requested from Erie County, PA, and Ashtabula County, OH, to combat the fire. The call for assistance was answered swiftly, with units from Ashtabula Township, Andover, Platea, Springfield, and Lake City joining the fight. Support also came in the form of Kingsville ambulance along with a specialized rehab unit from Lake City. These crews worked tirelessly in frigid, sub-zero temperatures that added layers of difficulty to the already challenging conditions. The cold weather dealt a critical setback to initial firefighting efforts, as two nearby hydrants - conveniently located almost directly across the street - were frozen and inoperable. This forced crews to utilize an operational hydrant at 12th and Beaver Streets, approximately a couple of blocks away. To maintain a steady water supply, a tanker shuttle task force was employed, highlighting the need for tankers and also the dedication and coordination of all responding units. As the fire continued, crews faced additional challenges when it was discovered that the basement stairs had burned out, leaving no direct access to the fire’s source. This required innovative tactics, including the deployment of cellar nozzles through holes cut in the floor above the basement. Despite these efforts, the stubborn blaze, coupled with the punishing cold, kept firefighters on the scene for an extended period.Ultimately, the fire was brought under control through sheer determination, expertise, and teamwork. The combined efforts of local and neighboring fire departments showcased their commitment to protecting lives and property, even under the harshest conditions. One individual was transported from the scene to University Hospital’s Brown Memorial for medical treatment.
