Quick Response Contained Attic Fire on Middle Road in Lake City

Narrative

Girard Township, PAThis afternoon at 3:23 PM, Lake City Fire Company was dispatched for a reported structure fire in the vicinity of 9100 Middle Road. Engine 643 responded within two minutes of dispatch. While Engine 643 was enroute, dispatch advised of the initial 911 caller reporting smoke coming from the attic of a structure. Chief 560 went enroute subsequently, and dispatch further advised that the fire was confined to the house, not the machining shop located to the rear of the property. Moments later, dispatch relayed an update from a caller on scene reporting visible flames coming from the roof.

Chief 560 arrived on scene at 3:29 PM, confirming a single-story residential structure with fire showing through the roof vent on the east side. He immediately instructed Engine 563 to take the address, stretch a handline, and begin an interior attack. Upon entry, crews confirmed no fire conditions were present on the first floor, with the active fire located in the attic. The first interior crew worked to being removing the ceiling where firefighters could hear the fire burning above them. The secondary interior crew worked to locate access to the attic.

Subsequently, Engine 644 was arriving on scene and was assigned to establish a water supply to Engine 563 and sent their crew inside to assist crews. Engine 644’s supply line was established within three minutes of arriving on scene. A secondary suppression line was also placed in service on the east side of the structure. This allowed crews to flow water through the gable vent and into the attic which helped bring the flames under control quickly.

Thanks to quick coordination, crews were able to apply water to the fire within one minute of arriving on scene. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, interior crews worked to pull ceiling in two rooms to check for fire extension below the attic space. Meanwhile, a roof crew removed the ridge vent as active spot fires were present along it. Thermal imaging cameras were deployed throughout the structure to locate hidden hotspots, and ventilation fans were used to clear smoke and heat from the residence.

According to officials, the rapid 911 report of smoke from the attic, paired with an attic that had flooring, helped prevent the fire from spreading downward into the living areas. The prompt response by Lake City and assisting departments allowed for quick suppression and minimal damage beyond the attic space.

There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
