Narrative
Springfield Township, PA – Early this morning, at approximately 4:30 AM, the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported brush fire in the vicinity of 3700 Nash Road.
Springfield's L2 arrived on scene and provided an initial size-up, reporting an active brush fire involving approximately three acres, with two nearby exposures potentially threatened by the advancing flames. Based on the size of the fire and the potential for further spread, L2 requested additional brush units from the Girard and Cranesville volunteer fire departments to assist with containment and suppression efforts.
Moments later, Utility 549 and Engine 644 arrived on scene, with firefighters quickly beginning operations to establish a perimeter around the burning area. Crews utilized backpack leaf blowers and hand tools to construct fire lines, clearing combustible vegetation and other ground materials to help slow the advancement of the flames and prevent the fire from spreading beyond the affected area.
The primary focus of the initial operations was to contain the fire, limit its spread, and protect the nearby exposures. Once crews successfully contained the fire, operations transitioned into the overhaul phase. Firefighters worked their way through the affected area, utilizing water carried aboard the responding brush units to extinguish remaining flames, hot spots, and smoldering vegetation. Crews also continued to strengthen the established fire lines to reduce the potential for the fire to rekindle or spread into surrounding vegetation.
The cause of the fire was not immediately available.
